What keeps oil companies from simply building more refineries to meet rising American demands?

Simple question.

Gas is already topping $3 a gallon and summer hasn't fully hit yet. We don't have enough refineries to produce enough gas so we have to import it, which drives up costs.

So it begs the question above? Why don't we just build more refineries? What keeps oil companies from simply building more refineries to meet rising American demands?
It's political because refineries pollute the environment and nobody wants them in their backyard. Also, why would oil companies want to shell out millions to lower the price of their product? They want to keep the price high so their execs can keep eating their caviar and fly their gold-plated jets. What keeps oil companies from simply building more refineries to meet rising American demands?
democrats, greenpeace, and a bunch of communists groups that want to ruin the American economy.

So get ready for your mud hut Al Gore wants you to live in. you'll even get a out house, and dirt floors. Think of it as camping.
$$$. Why would they want to spend money to build more refineries, which in turn would lower gas prices? That would be a double blow to their bottom line.
They don't want to build more refineries so they can charge more for gas. It's an excellent example of the theory of supply and demand.
we don't have a surplus of oil in the states for starters. we can't build more refineries anyway because of environmental policy. having the major oil surplus overseas gives the middle east the upperhand in importing. the oil company's aren't complaining though because its more money in their pockets.
Cause they are all greedy yuppies. Plus the US wants to conserve the oil we have. I read a while back that we have enough gasoline stored to run the entire US for 1 year
Refineries are dirty and nobody wants them in their town.

How can oil companies prepare for the future?

What if we start using electricity, solar energy, and wind energy power in the furture?

Can we stop global warming?

(I really want Al gore to answer this because Al gore made the movie An Inconvenient Truth.)How can oil companies prepare for the future?
I really don't think we can stop what is inevitable, what we have done has been done. But I think that Oil companies should prepare by investing into other forms of power. There is only so much oil on this planet, it will dry up eventually and from there oil companies cannot make money, even if this global warming doesn't happen just as Al Gore planned.

I really do think its funny that the human race hasn't gotten past the internal combustion engine, which to me is really outdated any way you look at it. Aside from the Wenkel engine we haven't changed the engine, we just added injectors. How can oil companies prepare for the future?
if we used those our world would be much better plus those are all around and they dont cost a dime.we may be able to stop global warming if everyone joins in on it
Figure out how to get and refine oil from our own country
all the oil companies care about is short term greed.
don know

u have to understand the economics of alternative energy. this is exactly what the name implies. whatever is cheapest is being used n that's coal.

btw world's secret society has already started by buying txu engery in texas.
you really think he's worried...
we can clean up our environment we can lower our emissions

but we are a society dependant on oil, we are a long way from converting to another source of energy and to conver means changing our whole infrastructure

and the technology is not here yet

side note: Al Gore does not do the walk he talks

He lives in a 22 room mansion which cost 33,000.00 in electrical

use, HE BOUGHT emission credits to excuse his c02 emissions

President Bush has a 4000 sq. ft house that uses a water based heat exchanger to heat or cool his house

guess who is more environmentally conscious

can we stop global warming if it is happening as is forcast ,no

BUT WE have not included mother nature in all this who might just suprise us

Who make and sells the oil barels for the big crude oil companies?

We would like to know who makes the oil barrels for the companies and can one buy and sell them to the big oil companies- how can one invest in this direction- Not oil but the barrels to sell to the companies?Who make and sells the oil barels for the big crude oil companies?
The term ';barrels'; of oil is just a unit of measure. Just like gallons of gas we don't buy them individually. Nice try.Who make and sells the oil barels for the big crude oil companies?
Your efforts would be best directed toward a plan to get the world off the rampant and deadly usage of fossil fuels and all the destructive attributes attached to that industry.
it's just a unit of measure

your question is like asking who makes the gallons for the dairy farmers. except in this analogy, milk is actually EVENTUALLY sold in one-gallon containers.

When the price crude oil is at a record high, how are oil companies earning record profits?

I am talking about companies that buy and refine the oil not the companies that actually sell the crude. When the price of wheat goes up, you don鈥檛 see bakers making record profits so how do oil companies pull this off? When the price crude oil is at a record high, how are oil companies earning record profits?
Because people aren't cutting back on buying it. Lok at SUV sales. Have they dropped? No. While driving do you see people driving more slowly to conserve? No. Until people slow their buying Oil companies will continue to make gret profits. Not sure I want the government controlling businesses though. It has to be done by supply and demand. Somebody needs to develop better alternatives and then we as consumers need to buy those alternatives.

jWhen the price crude oil is at a record high, how are oil companies earning record profits?
Hopefully some true republicans can shed light on this while the rest of us pay out the @SS for gas.
Well, to add to your question but not really answer it because I am not in the oil business. I don't think anyone in the oil business will answer your question. Who governs the oil co. ability to change prices. Is it done ';at will'; without regard for consumers? I've just recently heard about the new change (law?)government intervening when co. are thought to have ';gouged'; the consumer...THEN the gov. can step in....NOW WOULD BE A GOOD TIME, DON'T YOU THINK? And please, can someone explain to me why is it that diesel costs so much more that gas? When has that ever happened before? Diesel is LESS refined than gasoline! Let me put it another way: gas takes MORE refining than diesel! Same result! Are the oil co. afraid that people will convert to diesel vehicles %26amp; then convert the engine to run on peanut, potato or some other used oil that resturants dispose of, cutting oil co. profits? Picture the big oil co. meeting on Mon morn....Mr. #2 oil exec says: ';Give me the report from last month....Hmmmmm, I see. Wasn't our goal this month to make record profits';? What can we do? Mr. #3 oil exec says: ';I've heard people are thinking of going to diesel vehicles-better mileage %26amp; cheaper!'; Mr. #1 oil exec says: ';Well...we'll take care of that. ';All in favor of raising diesel prices by 30-35%?--Yeaaaaa / all opposed?...(silence). Think about this, I am not by any means an accounting guru, but didn't I learn somewhere along the line, that when supplies are low, the price increases %26amp; the opposite is true, when the supplies are in abundence, the price drops? Conserving %26amp; reducing oil consumption is paramount, then 2nd let's think of the cost of shipping the oil. The closer the product is from pumping, refining %26amp; getting to our vehicles, this should reduce the cost...right? Well then....WHAT ARE WE WAITING FOR????? I myself do drive 55-60mph (in the outside lane. this reduces all the idiots from passing on the right %26amp; saves me gas) I have heard that for every 5 mph over 60, you can add .40 cents to each gal of gas used. We can never ( in my opinion) get completely off oil, but we need to find a ';middle ground.'; Are you with me? Then let's gooooooooooooooooooo.............!!!!!!!
profits are limited by cash flow time lags, and they aren't released every day with commodity price changes - just every quarter. remember - costs remain the same for the oil companies, they simply earn more revenue because the price goes up - you're probably thinking about refineries?

Why are oil companies charging $3 a gallon for gas again, when the economy needs to recover?

Smart move guys.

This sure will help the economy. I was planning on making a few trips, but the f-ing gas prices made me so disgusted, I'm staying home. This is just extortion, and plain dumb. Why are oil companies charging $3 a gallon for gas again, when the economy needs to recover?
schools out and it's SUMMERTIME!!!

the greedy bastrads want to rape us again...Why are oil companies charging $3 a gallon for gas again, when the economy needs to recover?
Because they are running a business, not a charity.

We should do away with both gas subsidies and gas company preferences and let the free market truly prevail. Had the subsidies not been in place we'd be on hemp ethanol by now. (Did you know Henry Ford designed the model T to run on hemp ethanol but oil subsidies were introduced and killed the nascent hemp ethanol industry?)

But the dollar IS dropping due to too much spending, and inflation is going to get worse. Particularly food inflation since it isn't counted in government counted inflation for reporting purposes, and transportation costs (oil) are a huge part of food prices.

Welcome to the Obama presidency -- not that Bush's was much better in this regard, Obama is just doing it faster.
Because speculators are expecting the world economy to get better. They are also predicting an economic boon at the end of the year, and feel they would be best to hold on to their surplus of oil until the economy recovers.

The oil companies currently have a greater supply than the demand, but they are betting on a huge economic turn around. I don't think they have fully considered the consequences if this blows up in their faces.
Sir, that's a very good question, and the answer is very simple, but I'm afraid that many out there are not willing to face the fact that they have their politicians to thank for the price of gasoline! With all of the oil currently on the charts of the America Oil Companies we should not have to be dealing with high prices at the pumps but that's where your politicians, yes your green liberal politicians come into the picture. Before I go on lets talk about the huge oil reservoir under the Bakken Shale formation in North Dakota and Montana areas, 4.3 billion barrels of oil. And let's not forget the oil find in the Gulf of Mexcico, the largest American Oil find in a generation, 15 billion barrels. Now who can answer the simplest of questions, why won't the 'liberal, yes the liberal members of the house and senate allow our oil companies to drill? Its a simple enough question, why won't our liberal politicians allow our oil companies to drill our own oil? That's the question that will answer why our oil companies are charging $3.00 a barrel. And anyone that metions pollution is simply put either uninformed or plainly put has a liberal agenda; now what is that agenda, I won't pretend to know. May be one of you can tell all of us why the liberals want the price of oil to remain high?
Just a wild guess here ... because the global elite are again manipulating the price of oil as they did last year.

The problem (speculation driving up the price) was discussed in Congress during a weekend session, it was covered on C-SPAN, but the mainstream media chose to keep the people in the dark and blame the gas prices on something else.
Gas prices are going to get a lot higher. Think they were high under Bush, you ain't seen nothing yet. As soon as we get cape and trade, more green regulation and Obama taxing coal into oblivion, hang on to your wallet because inflation is just around the corner. The only thing holding down gas prices from what they were a year ago is the depressed global economy that is holding down demand. Just remember we warned you this was going to happen.
It is rather comical, because the oil companies have a greater supply than the demand for oil at the moment.

They are speculating that the economy will miraculously turn around at the end of the year.

When this supposed economic recovery occurs expect the gas prices to rise dramatically.
Here is a thought: companies are not out to get you.

Gas is up because of a few reasons

1. Our dollar's value has plummeted. We have to import oil because we refuse to drill for it here.

2. Gas always goes up during the summer. There is more demand and there are more mandated requirements.

3. The price of a barrel of crude has gone up.
Gas and oil are commodities, and are based on the value of the dollar.

If you want the price of oil and gas to go down, tell the idiot in the White House to tell the US Mint to stop printing money like it's going out of style, since THAT's what is driving the price up.
Oil companies do not just randomly decide what the price of gasoline will be today.

You are going to have to get over your feeling of entitlement to gasoline. It's going to get much more expensive in your lifetime.
It is not supply and demand since we have plenty of oil. The demand for gas is also down. I have read in several papers and also on yahoo news it is the speculators on wall street who are driving up the cost of oil.*
Because Obama raised the gasoline tax rate by another 12 cents a gallon. Remember when he said that he wasn't going to raise our taxes ';one dime';?
Democrats in illinois have imposed a 50 cent tax per gallon on gas, because they want us to buy green cars.

Guess who owns the green cars?
How many oil companies are even domestic? One???

Which one just moved to Dubai???
Why do dogs lick their testicles? Because they can.
no doubt it's bush and cheney's fault..oh wait a minute, they are not in control anymore. I guess it never was their fault to begin with since they are not in charge anymore. lol
Obama and his big oil cronies pushing up the price,,,,,not really but I have been dumbed down by the dems.
The Saudi's had to pay for that bling they gave Obama.
It's dumb. The could allow it to stay low a while longer.
Greed
It isn't actually the oil companies, it is Traitor Obama BBB (Butt Boy Barry), and the liberals in congress and the senate are responsible. they all hate america and will do anything they can to destroy us.
It's $3.00 a gallon because that is what people will pay. If no one bought gasoline the price would go down to deplete the supply. As soon as the supplies go down and the market stabilizes the price goes back up. It's cyclical.
Because the election is over and the economy is showing good signs.
What do you expect? They are Capitalists, Capitalism is all about the profit.
It's called Capitalism. see how well it works.
  • coolest myspace
  • Do the oil companies really have 68million acres in the gulf they can drill in gulf without restrictions?

The democrates claim the oil companies have all this acreage leased and don't need to open any other areas up. Is this a true statement?Do the oil companies really have 68million acres in the gulf they can drill in gulf without restrictions?
    No, they don't...and your first clue should been ';The democrates (sic) claim...';

Also, your question is in the wrong category...it doesn't have to do with the military.Do the oil companies really have 68million acres in the gulf they can drill in gulf without restrictions?
I forget the actual number but there is a large amount of area leased for drilling. What is not being said by the main media is that it is unknown for the most part if that land has oil. It will cost oil company millions upon millions of dollars to go thur the hit and miss drilling needed to find some oil. We do know there is oil in ANWAR in Alaska so we should get the drilling and production going there ASAP and stop fooling around and wasting time.

Also, the people who are making a big deal about big oil profits are not understanding something very basic. Most oil companies like Exon are only making about a 9% profit. The big amount of profits is because more people around the world are using more oil then ever especially in expanding markets like China and the Middle East. You will notice that the main media will not tell you how much percentage of profit the oil companies are making. The people who blame the oil companies will not say either since most don't know. Most businesses need to make at least over a10% profit to be able to keep going.

Congress had an investigation with some of the oil companies last year and warned them of not price gouging but that was all they could do because there was no evidence that it was happening. Now some critics are saying we should not drill because it will not help us lower prices now. Thats like saying don't call the police to stop a serial killer who just killed your neighbor because it won't help him any now eventhough there is a danger still around. Drill Now, Drill Often. Where is Jed Clampet ( the Beverly Hillbillies) now that we need him?
I just watched CNN’s international Channel(3pm EST), breaking the news that oil price spikes again. But the anchor and the reporter assert it is China’s diesel demand contributed to the hike.

Waited a sec ! It is already THIRD time I am hearing CNN’s assertion of China’s diesel demand. The first time was about two weeks ago. What’s going on?

Then, Israel’s-Iran-attack-drill news flashing back-------Which Was Just Happened This Morning ! That “unmistakable signal” is surely an act to have a consequence of oil supply disruption ! Why is it not reported as a oil spiking cause ? !

Time to scapegoat China again before a major offensive ? To verify, I went to CNN web site , there it is :

    China hikes fuel prices http://money.cnn.com/2008/06/20/news/int…

    China to raise energy prices

    http://money.cnn.com/2008/06/19/news/int…

But nowhere saying that Israel’s-Iran-attack-drill will unstablize the oil supply region, causing the oil price up.

For Israelis Iran Strike Drill see

    http://www.jpost.com/servlet/Satellite?c…
They do have 68 million acres. It's just not in the Gulf. It's on Federal Wildlife reserves. The oil companies are not drilling it because it's too expensive to do so. They were waiting for the easier off-shore drilling to be approved. BTW, more oil won't help prices...the suits on Wall Street need to stop speculating, that'll bring the prices down.
That's not all in the Gulf, so no. About 76% of the public waters under lease in the Gulf are not being drilled yet.

The 68 million acres includes more than 40 million acres in Idaho, Utah, and a bunch of other states.
Yeah, they already have rights in the gulf and alaska. Does that mean they have rights to all the oil in the gulf and alaska? Of course not. Should they, yes of course they should.
Actually that was proven to be a number they pulled out of their hat within a couple of hours and is completely phony. They have spent the last 20 years putting areas where known reserves are located completely off limits.
Just because its open for drilling doesnt mean theres oil there, oil companies risk billions of dllars not to mention time in exploring oil. Research needs to be determine first to warrant the expensive drilling.
The issue with the leases they currently have is that they are too short to permit the testing and exploration that needs to be done to make their efforts worthwhile.
Oil companies are raising prices and won't stop until they get what they want and that's to drill anywhere they want
    Yes, including land in Alaska.
No! They may have 68 million acres the Republicans would like to open up for them to drill in which belong to the people of the United Sates of America! Not to the oil companies!

Bush and McCain want to see how much wildlife they can destroy using a trumped up oil shortage as a reason. There is PLENTY of oil. All the oil companies have to do is ask, but they haven't and drilling in federally owned property is why they haven't asked! There is no oil shortage and there never has been one!

As far as clean energy, if the oil companies would quit buying all the patents perhaps we would have a lot more by now but they don't want to risk their obscene profits!

    The oil companies according to this ';Congressman Nick Rahall is telling big oil companies to ';use it or lose it.';

Rahall, D-W.Va., introduced legislation last week that gives those companies an ultimatum: Start producing oil on their 68 million acres of inactive land or risk federal restrictions on future lease requests.

A report by the U.S. House Committee on Natural Resources, which Rahall chairs, states that oil and gas companies hold leases to 68 million acres of federal land and waters, spread out all across the country, that are not producing anything. An additional 4.8 million barrels of oil could be produced daily if the land was utilized, the report says.

Rahall told the Daily Mail that oil companies should be held accountable much like coal companies, which are required by federal law to develop their leases.

';Companies that lease federal coal resources are required, as a result of the Federal Coal Leasing Amendments Act of 1976, to diligently develop their leases,'; Rahall said. ';This requirement has discouraged the rampant speculation on federal coal as a result of the energy crises of the 1970s -- the same type of speculation that now appears to be plaguing the federal oil and gas leasing program.'; have 68 million acres they don't use that is already LEASED to them.

How bad do you hate oil companies for making gm destroy all the electric cars?

It happened years ago but we should preserving what is left of our non renewable oil. What are some affordable electric cars out right now?How bad do you hate oil companies for making gm destroy all the electric cars?
i take it ur talking about the EV1 yea it was sad,but now we are heading back to electric cars. How bad do you hate oil companies for making gm destroy all the electric cars?
not any more than people that that do not have a clue what they are talking about. Therefore, instead of spreading hate against people with no clue, I will spread some advice, you need to see a psychiatrist about your paranoia schizophrenia.
GM had little interst in keeping the cars either since the maintenance was virtually nil on these cars. Lots of money is made changing oil and filters. The maintenance bays would have been empty.
I think it's terrible. There was an electric Studebaker
I have no hate in my heart for those oil companies. Electric cars like the Tesla Roadster will come in due time.

Why aren't the Oil Companies building new or updating the old refineries with there record profits?

Wouldn't you think that they would be ready to spend some of there extra profits to update there refineries which are all 40 or 50 years old? Do they know something that we don't like there unbelievable profits will continue indefinitely or maybe oil is going to run out sooner they anyone realizes? Why aren't the Oil Companies building new or updating the old refineries with there record profits?
Because they have no reason to make the investment to continue with the astronomical profits. They won't build more capacity because then there would be more supply, thus price would decrease.

What can the American people do to make oil companies lower gas prices?

It's just sickening what the oil companies and the US Govt are doing to this country. What can we do to stop this?

Real ideas please! What can the American people do to make oil companies lower gas prices?
stop buying gas...shoot a few of the exec....don't elect a pres. that's owned by the oil companies....What can the American people do to make oil companies lower gas prices?
Allow them to build more refineries. Allow them to tap unexplored sources. The government is the ones holding this up. Congress that is. oh and the feds are taking in about .30 per gal while the oil companies are only getting about .08 per gal. Let lay the blame where it should be.
Of course war with another country, especially an oil country doesn't help matters. But Americans can do a lot. Stop buying so much gas. Only go places that are absolutely necessary, car pool, take a bus, walk or ride a bike if it's feasible in a particular situation. Buy vehicles that are more energy efficient and demand that auto makers produce them. Can you imagine what it would do to the oil companies if America would just get rid of all of it's SUVs?
Don't vote people into Presidency that were previously employed by or have ties to Big Oil.

Drive better fuel efficient vehicles. Less demand = lower prices.
Bush is a Lame Duck. There was no reason to invade and occupy Iraq. But our need for oil was apparent. And as we all know now, or at least it has become public, Bush had intentions of invading Iraq when he came into office.

But things didn't go as planned. There were no ';flowers'; or 'singsongs'; about freedom and liberty. We went in with a heavy hand and we have killed unmercifully for five years and counting.

    What do we do?

We speak our minds although it will do little good at this juncture.

and so we are very very careful the next time around. We elect someone we can trust, if that is at all possible. We can even demand the use of paper ballots. We cannot trust voting machines anymore no matter WHAT we are told.

We hope and pray for a president who, amongst other positives, at least has diplomatic skills and and is world traveled.

More than anything we hope and pray that the carnage and destruction in Iraq comes to an end. Until then, we will continue to suffer the consequences of high oil prices.

Even when we leave and that country takes over its own we will still suffer.

But not so much if we have a president who can smooth over past mistakes.
Law of supply and demand: if we stop buying it, the price will go down.... if we keep buying it, the price will go up because the demand is high
    1) Switch to one car per family instead of 3 or 4. If there will be fewer cars...the demand for gas will drop and the prices are gonna have to be lowered.

    2) Invest more in a eco-friendly cars instead of having several regular cars. This way the prices will drop and the air-polution will decrease as well.

    3) Strike. Organize a national campaign and urge people to NOT gas their cars on a particular day. The ONE day many Americans will stay away from the gas stations will make a hell of a difference!
Well they can stop buying the oil that they produce or find other ways not to use cars that dont use a lot of gas. Well in the news they said because of the winter thing with Catrina they are still having trouble making the pumps work i think that's a lot of B.S they know what there doing and if the stores try to sell it cheap they can get in trouble. now that interesting.
    stop driving their gas guzzlers.
The more we demand gasoline, that is, buy more of it fill our huge SUVs, the longer prices will stay where they are. Same concept as any other merchant. What does any retailer do when they have product they're having trouble selling? They put it on sale. If we collectively shrink the demand for gasoline, the market will force them to lower the price. This is a real idea. But the problem is, it's hard to get 300 million Americans on board with this plan. Until it happens, the oil companies will continue doing what they do, because they know our demand will continue to be high. I'm sure this isn't the answer anyone wants to hear, but I believe it to be true.
invest in alternative fuel, Brazil is practically independent from oil companies, if they can do it and they are not as advanced as we are, why cant we?.....thanks to all those FAT CATS in the government.
How about kicking all the illegals out of the country and we'll have several million people not buying gas so the price would go down.

We don't rely on oil from the middle east, the rest of the world does. We have plenty of oil resources here in the US. That's why our gas prices stay relatively low compared to the rest of the world. The countries that pay less than us either have their own resources, or are kept artificially low by subsidies from their governments. Many of those countries are facing major financial problems because of it.

The problem is the lack of oil refineries and an increase in demand.

';The current refinery squeeze has been building for years. For the past two decades, deregulation and low profits have combined to push the industry into consolidation. Partly because of environmental regulations, it was cheaper to expand existing refineries than to build new ones. In 1981, the US had 324 refineries with a total capacity of 18.6 million barrels per day, the Department of Energy reports. Today, there are just 132 oil refineries with a capacity of 16.8 million b.p.d., according to Oil and Gas Journal, a trade publication.'; - Christian Science Monitor September 21, 2005

Our gas prices have spiked recently because refineries have been shut down for maintenance.
Ask for a percentage of the take, not only the stock holders. If the oil company was made to contribute to the betterment of all needy families and individuals, companies and other depleted areas in society, their profit margin would be much lower and someone could actually say the oil industry has been good for the people, instead of always being good for the few.I really think if the money is going to be made by these large companies, they need to start contributing back into other areas . To the holders of the great wealth, I would say ( bring it home, bring it back home and Thank You)
Prevent going into war with other countries.

Are Oil Companies really keeping electric cars from being further developed or not?

    Yes or No?

Why don't electric companies lobby for this, or push for this if this is something that would benefit them greatly. Is there some war between the Oil and Electric companies? Are Oil Companies really keeping electric cars from being further developed or not?
I would say that it's more likely for the auto manufacturers to oppose electric cars since the cost of batteries are quite high due to the materials required and currently, any mass production would drive those prices up due to the limited supply of lithium. The auto manufacturers do want to introduce another technology as it would create a demand for new vehicles above normal replacement cycles. They've always invested in designed obsolescence whether it be style changes such as tail fins, concept changes such as SUV's, or technology changes such as Hybrids, Flexfuel and more powerful engines. The net effect of these introductions has been to allow production growth at a higher rate than the population growth. Electric vehicles do fit into this model but not as well as hydrogen cars since the batteries would represent a significant cost that could not be reduced whereas fuel cells though expensive now, are likely to become less expensive when in mass production as it's more technology than materials.

EV's represent a problem for Electric companies as the transmission infrastructure is already at it's limits. There is surplus capacity but at different time slots so charge on demand EV's would be costly to Electric companies however if the transmission lines are made intelligent and can coordinate with the EV's that are plugged in to schedule their charges, they could maximize the use of existing transmission lines. Hence Electric companies are in a quandry, if EV's are introduced before intelligent transmission line protocols are standardized and enforced on the plugins, they would have to upgrade their infrastructure but if intelligent infrastructure can be deployed first and auto manufacturers cooperate then the Electric companies stand to benefit. Unfortunately, deploying intelligence in the power grid is not a trivial task so the Electric companies can do with as much delay in EV introductions as possible.

Oil companies see themselves as Energy companies and invest in every form of energy development. Many of the fundamentals are the same, the property negotiations and land leasing for wind power is very similar to securing drilling rights and right of ways for pipelines so oil companies are still the most experienced at those tasks. Granted they will promote whatever is most profitable at the time but you can bet that whatever comes out on the market, the oil companies will be positioned to take advantage of it.Are Oil Companies really keeping electric cars from being further developed or not?

What oil companies currently drill in the Gulf of Mexico?

Well I live in Florida near the west coast and I've heard from alot of people you can get hired almost immediately to work on an oil-rig in the Gulf. The problem is I have not the slightest clue what companies run rigs out there... I would like to get the names and go on their sites to see whos hiring, for what and apply DIRECTLY.What oil companies currently drill in the Gulf of Mexico?
Well, about 10 years ago, you could get hired, no experience, no certs, no training. Entry-level paid about $550 a week back then.

Nowadays you'll need certs and training before they will even let you on an offshore rig or platform.

It takes a while to get everything and it costs about $1,500.

Right now, work is real slow offshore. What oil companies currently drill in the Gulf of Mexico?

How about ignore large oil companies and have a multi-energy transportation system?

More aspects to the transportation industry. Consumers have more options. There would be more opportunities for growth and jobs for multiple industries. R%26amp;D would grow (more jobs), energy patents would carry more weight (instead of being ignored), and we wouldn't be at the whims of gas prices. How about ignore large oil companies and have a multi-energy transportation system?
Sounds good to me except that the oil companies will defiantly have a place in it. Just a smaller one.How about ignore large oil companies and have a multi-energy transportation system?
Sure, we can have solar power cars, and go about forty on the highway(considering you have a family of four or something). Or you can convert your car to run on grease, and smell like a Macdonald's garbage can. This would be a good idea but the alternative fuel is not there yet. Plus there is going to need a complete overhaul on our fuel facilities(previously known as gas stations). Then you need to convince people to buy the expensive alternative fuel car, since new technology usually is, over the cheaper gas car. Oil companies may have a part in why we don't do as you say but there are other reasons too.
Great !! What do you have that doesn't run on petroleum?

How were oil companies able to raise oil and gas prices after 9/11?

I am doing a research essay on how oil corporations were able to use the 9/11 attacks to their own advantages. I was wondering how they were able to raise it, my professor told me I need specific events on how the oil corporations and the government negotiated to raise the oil prices dramatically.

What did the oil companies do to raise the price of oil and gas after 9/11 is pretty much my question. How were oil companies able to raise oil and gas prices after 9/11?
A major event occurred. Therefore, the oil corporations raised the price of their products.

There doesn't have to be a logical reason. It's just that our economy is so intertwined with oil that when ANYTHING happens, they can jump up and say, ';We have to raise our prices because the hippopotamus flu is showing up in Paraguay and this caused a change in our shipping and refinery process, and so YOU have to pay for it because we don't want to sell our vacation homes in Tahiti!'; And then we pay.

In the case of 9/11, if there was such a spike in prices, which I don't remember, it was likely because of delays and increased costs due to enhanced security. How were oil companies able to raise oil and gas prices after 9/11?
You need to research what factors control the price of Oil and Natural Gas. Oil companies and government do not 'conspire' to raise the price of Oil and Gas. Are they publicly traded commodities? Does the market drive the price of Oil and Gas?

A better question is, what specific events occurred as a result of the 9/11 attacks that lead to an increase in the traded price of oil and gas?

A decrease in supply or an increase in demand. Did the U.S. import less oil from overseas causing an increase in supply which facilitated an increase in prices?

Oil companies and 'government' do not take advantages and set prices on oil and gas.

You professor sounds like a hippie conspiracy theorist.

    My opinion, respectively.
More or less pretended that it was neccessary, their owners are part of the ruling classes, the media and government are on the same side, they're the same people, they do what they want, and 9/11 was an excellent excuse to do anything they wanted.

Sorry, that won't help your essay, but I'm sure you'll find specifics.
I believe it started with a phone call. There is collusion in prices everywhere and the Feds could care less. The media runs interference for the big guys.

It doesn't much matter what the disruption is... any excuse is good enough to raise prices.
How do you know if that assertion is even true? Sounds like your professor is biased (not surprisingly).

Why do oil companies act like oil is a renewable resource?

Oil companies talk and act like lower oil prices are likely, however, the oil futures market and hedge funds point to higher and higher prices (attributed to ';peak oil';).

What is the motivation of the oil companies for their posItion? Why do oil companies act like oil is a renewable resource?
Oil is renewable. The only problem is that oil from sources other than crude fossil oils is far more expensive. Why do oil companies act like oil is a renewable resource?
When it comes to oil or politics, I lose my focus for a brighter future.
Because they know that there is enough fossil fuels to last for their lifetime and they are making huge amounts of money. They don't care about our descendants.

Why should the oil companies be allowed to take in record profits on the backs of working class americans?

This is hurting our country, the government should be doing something to stop it!Why should the oil companies be allowed to take in record profits on the backs of working class americans?
Lets dispell some of these myths about big oil record profits and to do this I am going to have to define some things. If you can stick with it and not stop reading out of boredom, I hope I can change your mind. It isn't big oil, but our own government who is hurting us when it comes to oil prices.

Gross income is commonly defined as the amount of a company's or a person's income before all deductions or any taxpayer’s income, except that which is specifically excluded by the Internal Revenue Code, before taking deductions or taxes into account. For a business, this amount is pre-tax net sales less cost of sales.

Profit margin, Net Margin or Net Profit Ratio all refer to a measure of profitability. It is calculated using a formula and written as a percentage or a number.

For example, a company produces a loaf of bread and sells it for 10 units of currency. It cost the company 6 units of currency to produce the bread and it also had to pay an additional 2 units of currency in tax.

That makes the company's net income 2 units of currency (10 - 6, before tax, then minus 2 for tax). Since its revenue is 10 units of currency, the profit margin would be (2 / 10) or 20%.

Now that I have explained the difference between gross income and profit margin, let’s look at how liberals exploit figures and twist words to make big oil look bad.

The first thing they do is make sure to emphasize RECORD when they are talking about oil company profits. Right away, this makes people assume, even if subconsciously, that they are being taken advantage of. If the price of gas is so high, how can oil companies be making record profits? If an oil company makes a dollar more this year, when compared to last year, that would be a record profit. Another thing you must consider is that our population increases every year, as does our consumption of gasoline and oil products. I do not think anyone would argue that our gasoline usage is decreasing. If this is so, it only makes sense that sales are going to amount to more than the year before.

I don’t think anyone would fault the oil company for making enough money to cover it’s operating cost. After all, they can’t make less than what the product cost to produce and deliver, or they would go out of business. This is why we have to look at profit margin because it shows us exactly how much money the oil companies get to keep. The average profit margin of big oil is around 8%. This means that big oil is only getting to keep 8% out of those record profits. Eight percent of the oil companies gross profits still seems like a huge amount, until you consider that companies like Microsoft have a profit margin of over 20%. That is more than twice of the actual profit kept by big oil. Why is it that you never hear liberals complaining about their greed? After all, just think how many more computers could be available for our children if Microsoft’s profit margin was only 8%. That was just one example of many companies, which have an outrageous profit margin in comparison to big oil.

Let me ask you, who do you think these greedy shareholders are in big oil anyway? The majority of them are you and I. “What?” Yep, you heard me right. I would bet that if many of you were to look into where your 401k money is going, you would find that it is being invested in oil companies. I challenge you to check and prove me wrong. Find out exactly how your money is being invested. You might be surprised.

One last think I would like to mention, is that placing higher taxes on big oil, isn’t going to hurt the oil companies. Their profit margin will stay the same. A new tax is chalked up as an operating cost and then passed on to you at the pump. This is on top of the tax that the government already charges you for purchasing fuel. They already get anywhere from 40 – 80 cents per gallon in taxes, depending on where you are located. Doesn’t that infuriate you? Isn’t it bad enough that the government has had its hand in your pocket once? Now they are trying to dupe you into paying them again by getting you to support the tax that is supposed to curb the greed of big oil. Wake up America. It isn’t big oil that is being greedy and driving up price. It is our Congress and their inane taxes and environmental restrictions, which don’t allow us to look for oil here. The moment OPEC got wind that we were drilling for our own oil, the price would drop like a rock. Why should the oil companies be allowed to take in record profits on the backs of working class americans?
Amen. I was beginning to feel somewhat alienated and out of touch with reality as it seems no one cares about those record profits - people seem to simply assume that we are powerless... Ergo, some people seem to be of the view that those capitalist market fluctuations (in only one direction - up) are simply a natural and exclusive market response to the alleged growing demand for oil in rapidly expanding markets (China - communist?)... But that simple analysis ignores the fact that some other countries harbor much lower prices (Venezuela 17 cents a gallon!)..

Being who I am - I am passionate - I would advocate a socialist government which will simply step in and STOP these wild and unexpected sudden price increases.

As a realist, however, I am aware that people are afraid of ';communism'; - they seem to ignore the fact that fundamentally it's just a word.. That said, and because of same, we need some ';Managed Economy'; middle ground (disguised communism).. In the US the only tool is Antitrust laws (Sherman Act et al)...

Speaking of marketing, please do remember (I speak from experience) that if you market your beautiful bust your significant other will always ask him (or her) self if they are attracted to you b/c of the countours of your lovely ___... Or b/c your mind is truly engaging and moving in the right direction...

    That said, nice bust.

    :)
Redirect your anger at the politicians who wont let us drill in Anwar or anywhere else for that matter. They havent allowed us to be build new refineries either. Look next time you fill up and do some math and find out how small the profit of an oil company is compared to say a pharmeceutical company. Dont be duped by politicians who want you to see the oil companies as the bad guys and after all who are the oil companies the shareholders. Ask yourself who they are

The pensioners the people with 401ks and iras. They are your neighbors and your coworkers. Thats who oil companies are

You need to get educated and stop watching tv news for your info
That does seem odd, considering the big oil company's continue to say that prices are not their fault. That being said, why are they making record breaking profits. If I own a hot dog stand, and suddenly hot dogs are difficult to come by, but I actually make my own, then I super up the price of my hot dogs, Is it my complicit action that makes me wealthy? Of course it is. If my entire town needs my hot dogs, do I have the right to hostage that town for my profit? I don't get it either. Also if we are the third largest producing oil country, why do we depend on other countries? If our government cannot protect our own resources, why the hell are they there.

Sorry, I cannot answer your question, because I don't get it either.
Well things like this they call capitalism and it runs all democratit societies and most communist nations. Remember most communist nations are run by very few who make all the rules and get most of the money. In a capitalist society like we have here in America you make money to make more money no matter who it hurts but some government oversight needs to be applied there is no reason what so ever a CEO of an oil company should get a 400 mil bonus like the CEO of Occidental Oil got last year that money could have been put to R%26amp;D and lower pricing at the pump but nooooo he gets a huge bonus check and smiles all the way to the bank
Bravo Debra! Could not have said it better myself. Look to the government for most of our problems. The government is the reason our jobs went overseas, will not allow us to drill our own resources, and if we are not careful, they will control our healthcare then we are all in trouble.
Sorry, but your question is pretty dumb. What do you mean why should oil companies be ';allowed';?!?! because it's their product!! they've taken the financial risk.

you're pretty much saying that companies don't have a right to keep the profits from products/services they sell. If businesses weren't allowed to keep their profits, then no one would go into business!

And what does that mean: ';on the backs of working class americans';?!

That's so silly. i am a democrat through %26amp; through, but your remarks are just so goofy.
When you have as much money as big oil, and you have both parties full of corrupt politicians, this situation is inevitable. There is a simple solution- gas in Venezuela sells for 12 cents a gallon- Ours is headed to over $5 a gallon and beyond - why the difference? Chavez nationalized the oil companies and took away the profit motive- We should do the same.
From what I've heard the gas companies get 8 cents per gallon. The government gets a huge amount in taxes something like 40 to 60 cents per gallon. Possibly the taxes on gasoline should be looked at before the oil companies. I just don't see the government helping us out though because they get a lot of money from gas.
if you don't like the cost of fuel... DON'T buy it .. walk use a bicycle. or better yet DRIVE less. its not too difficult to combine errands and trips..

OR BETTER YET ... we can DRILL the oil out of our own country.. you can blame the environmentalist for that.
We have not power to reverse that trend.
they should all be taking over by the government, maybe when obama gets elected.
for the same reason you would if you could
The oil companies are working in a free enterprise system! They are entitled to make a profit. The ogre ';BIG,BAD, oil companies'; only make around 8% profit, which is piddling compared to some of the other corporations in America make, and noone is screaming for the government to make THEM stop!

Like so many others, you are sadly misinformed about the causes of our problems with oil and prices. The real problem starts with the very entity that you are calling on to stop the oil companies!!!

Our government, for various reasons, is not allowing the exploration and production of energy resources here in oown country! In our country we have the resources to become totally energy independent. It is a FACT that we have the oil and the coal necessary to fuel our own country for centuries. But, the companies who can develop these resources for us are not being allowed to do it!

This includes the oil companies, which are ready and willing to drill for crude in Alaska and off the coastlines.

This includes, too, the companies which are ready to mine the coal, which we have in vast amounts, to convert to energy.

If the government takes away, even more from the oil companies profits, the oil companies will have no optio but to decrease exploration and development!

Instead of calling for the government to hogtie the oil companies, call for them to enable these companies to develop our resources and get us out from under the thumbs of other oil-producing nations that hate us!!!!!

Edit; Why do some people keep parroting '; record breaking profits';?

Who are you quoting and who's records are they breaking? Many of the Fortune 500 corps are making hugely greater profits than the oil companies! Do you honestly think that none of that profit comes ';on the backs of working class people?

    Edit #2: Double bravo U.A.O.!!!!!!

  • Why are the oil companies insisting that demand is up, when gas stations have some pumps closed?

They won't supply enough, so the demand will be higher. Their profits soar! Hillary better do what she says. She said no taxes on gas this summer! She doesn't have the authority to do that. Why did she lie? You'll soon see, she lied about wanting to run for 2 1/2 yrs. God help us all. She is a natural born liar already. Do your homework on her. Then vote for anyone but her in November. Why are the oil companies insisting that demand is up, when gas stations have some pumps closed?
Because its there court, they have the ball, they make the rules and no else can play. If gas prices bother you so much why dont you figure an alternative for yourself. I mean really, gas prices only affect the ones that truly cant figure out a diffrent way other than keep putting up with it and paying what they want. If you can find a diffrent way to save yourself money than do it.........or else quit complainingWhy are the oil companies insisting that demand is up, when gas stations have some pumps closed?
Whom ever wrote the answer, the ball is in their ';COURT';, must have lots of money to tell everyone in America to save their cash ';SOME OTHER WAY';. This is real life. I can tell your your not on the court playing. Report Abuse

The demand is growing around the world, not just the US.

In any event, if you really want to bring prices down the US will have to nationalize the oil industry. But since people here are so freaking brainwashed about how capitalism is the only and only way to do business that won't happen.

Corporations sure have Americans by the balls. They keep getting lawmakers to make it easier for them to rip off people, they're getting richer than ever, and there's nothing anyone can do about it.

People like Obama might bring some honesty back but he'll need a majority of like minded Democrats in the Congress and the Senate and I doubt Americans will give him that much.

So, we'll just keep going in circles while the rich keeps getting richer and the poor keep losing their money and political power willingly.

What are some ways to force oil companies to lower their prices?

Aside from asking them to pump out more oil.

For example: Raise food prices of other countries that the U.S trades to.

I don't know how legitimate that above statement is, but that is the only thing I could think of so far.

Thank you for your time. What are some ways to force oil companies to lower their prices?
Well, there are lot of things that can be done; but as far as common man is concerned we can :-

** minimize the use of oil/gasoline - can be done by using car pooled, taking public transportation, don't buy gas/petrol on specific day of a week, etc....

As far as Govt is concerned, they can try to do something to break the monopoly of OPEC and oil companies. They can also work towards promoting alternative source of fuel. This promotion is going to break the moral of the OPEC and Oil producing companiesWhat are some ways to force oil companies to lower their prices?
Windfall profit tax to the big oil companies. Tax their outrageous profits.

Step up production of bio fuels so it is real competition to crude oil. Make these bio fuels out of something other than corn so it does not effect the production of food. Celulostic ethanol can me made from switch grass or wood by products. This type of ethanol is much more efficient to manufacture than corn ethanol. Start production of bio diesel from algae.
Good question. Oil companies, work on the profit motive and the price of oil they buy or extract is the key, world market prices for oil are strongly influenced by traders, buying oil as a commody, a hedge against a falling dollar...........

In other words, my suggestion is to increase the value of the dollar so it buys relatively more oil. This can be done be re-establishing trust in the dollar worldwide by:

    1. PAYING DOWN THE DEBT- if america returns to paying its debts, the world will regain trust in the long term security of the dollar.

    2. Reduce international stress- financial markets react negatively/insecurely whenever we threaten to bomb Iran or whoever.

    3. invest in alternative fuels, including technologies to extract the hard to reach huge oil fields in north dakota, wyoming and the rockies.

    4. raise interest rates , so investors will invest in the dollar again

while these dont make big oil lower their prices directly, indirectly will have a much greater and lasting effect.......
I think the price of oil is not going down for a loooong while because:

    1. Our complete dependence on oil.....and

    2. Oil suppliers are meeting demand, its not like there is a shortage. Demand increases as it is now, price naturally increases with it

    3. and the fact that the large oil supplying countries act as a cartel

    4. Also, the US is at war in a country that was a large producer....obviously they can not produce as much as they were previously capable

    5. The U.S and U.N. are now imposing sanctions on Iran, another large oil producer

In my humble opinion, for these reasons, politics need to change before the price of oil will go down.
The only way to force oil companies to lower their prices is to put a maximum price or a price ceiling on it, and only the President can initiate that.

And to be completely honest, gas prices will always rise. In '81 they were $3.31, then went down, back up, down, up, down, up. They fluctuate constantly. Consumers just weren't expecting it to go up so fast, and nobody had time to accomodate for it.
Take away from the demand for oil, then they'll lower the prices. Many people (in places like Portland) live without even owning a car. Other things you can do are walk or ride your bike on shorter trips. Think about whether trips in the car are necessary. If you are going to use a car, use one with better mileage as opposed to a gas guzzler (like SUV's).
greater taxes in their profits. also lower prices means lower taxes in oil companies

If people think Oil companies are profiting why don't they start there own oil companies?

You only need around 250 million start up, see how much money you make. Oil companies only make small profits per gallon. See how profitable it is when you drill up a duster, you people think a gusher is just round the corner. If people think Oil companies are profiting why don't they start there own oil companies?
People should at least be smart enough to invest in oil company stock. Mine is doing very well. Making money is so much nicer than whining constantly. If people think Oil companies are profiting why don't they start there own oil companies?
    LOL @ Mr. Cool.

This question is like saying if you dont like your boss start your own million dollar corporation. Easier said than done dude. You'd be better off tweaking your car to run on alternative resources. Better yet, protest your greedy corporations and tell them to make cars that run on alternate fuel for the average guy vs. running the country into the ground being greedy and jacking up the price of gas.
You have offered the best rejoinder to the arguments of the tax ';Big'; oil crowd, that I have read. The complainers should seek the aid of the The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
i wish i could, you see what people are willing to pay, some people are even trading there blood, choosing gas over food lol. oil is a great business to get into
Am I wrong or didn't most of the oil companies show several BILLION dollars in profit last year?
People don't understand the difference between profit and profit margin.
You need friggin huge amounts of capital to start one.
Because we cant afford to start our own because of gas prices.

What are the negative effects on the major oil companies if the Oil Deregulation Law would be canceled?

Would the system of pricing, retailing and producing of oil remain stable? Why or why not? What are the negative effects on the major oil companies if the Oil Deregulation Law would be canceled?
Their production would be 'bottle-necked' to create an atmosphere of 'low supply and high demand'. Additional, their growth (nee, wealth) would be within a certain manageable ceiling. What are the negative effects on the major oil companies if the Oil Deregulation Law would be canceled?
    For information details: http://nikkicatsourasaccident.blogspot.com/
Of which deregulation rules are you speaking? Different ones would have different results.

Do oil companies get their oil from OPEC or do they get it from drilling for it themselves?

If the oil companies get their oil from their own drilling, why do we depend on OPEC (specifically Saudi Arabia) to get our oil? Why don't we just buy our oil from the oil companies only?Do oil companies get their oil from OPEC or do they get it from drilling for it themselves?
The US Consumes about 19 Million Barrels of oil per day. Of this just over 5 Million comes from oil wells within the US. The rest is imported. The oil companies must sell the oil at world prices because about 70% of the oil they sell is bought at world prices. World oil prices have been going up, up and up some more. The US gets its oil from Canada, Mexico, and venisuala and the rest from the middle east.Do oil companies get their oil from OPEC or do they get it from drilling for it themselves?
Canada is the U.S. largest supplier of crude oil.

The U.S.A. exports over a million barrels per day.

Of 278,566 barrels/day imported, 169,659 barrels come from OPEC.

You can find this and other fascinating data from your government website at

    http://www.eia.doe.gov/
If I understand correctly, OPEC is merely an organization of the major companies, it is not a producer in and of itself.
We have to buy it from OPEC because we sell our own crude to China....how's that grab ya.

How come oil companies will most likely post record profits?

And they say that there is nothing they can do about the price of GAS.

It doesnt make sense, they defend the prices saying there is nothing they can do about production or demand etc.

That would be fine if they made a loss or even if they made less profit than last year.,

Yet year on year they make more money than the year before. How come oil companies will most likely post record profits?
Because the President is in the oil business. How come oil companies will most likely post record profits?
Large developing countries like India and China are buying more oil and our country won't allow oil drilling off shore or in Alaska or even for more refineries to be built. Therefore there is less oil to go around more people which drives the price up. Add to that problem, now large companies are speculating on oil and it drives it up higher. Part of my 401k is invested in oil, so that helps in one way, but paying so much at the pump offsets any gain. We need government officials that aren't afraid to anger environmentalist and start drilling in areas that the US controls while simultaneously encourage (through tax credits or whatever) alternative energy. If we don't find an alternative, we are going to pay more and more.
they have the green light from you precedent bush that is why the scams do so much profit.but the public do nothing to stop them.Americans have to much trust to their government, and follow them to the slurred house.why all trucks and cars block the streets and let their .truck and a cars and let them for a week, and you will see Wat will happen.the government will force the oil co,or the government will collapse.
the answer is politics. Coming from an oil drilling family, i often ask the same thing. Problem is we buy over 855 of our oil from other countries. Hey we go to Iran and piss them off they pretty much say ok, im gonna raise your the cost of my oil to you.

In my opinion the American Political system is what raises gas prices. Wehave pissed off so many people that have control over us.

Plus OPEc pretty much sets your prices. Bush and Shell and Exxon mobil, they dont set gas prices par say. Overseas countries set gas prices.
We need the government to help us out but they too have their share of the profits. There is a lot of corruption going on involving people that have enough money for 8 lifetimes.
Because they're dickheads, duh. They don't give a crap about the consumer, unless it means making more profit.
Because we keep buying their products. Time for some different energy sources.

  • How do oil companies fill three grades of gas from a single tanker with one hose?

Anytime I see the tanker at the gas station, a single inground tank seems to be getting filled from a single hose coming out of the one tanker, and suddenly we have three different octane rated gasolines! How do oil companies fill three grades of gas from a single tanker with one hose?
I used to work at a gas station. We had 3 tanks underground and they would not be filled on the same day. each delivery would be a different type of gas. There were 4 different hatches in the parking lot. ( We had deisel also)How do oil companies fill three grades of gas from a single tanker with one hose?
Usually its one long tanker coupled to a short one...I believe the long tanker actually has two tanks separated with a baffle..so now you have a Truck trailer carrying 3 grades of fuel...I guess you could have a long tanker with 3 separate tanks also..
They only fill one grade at a time. Walk up to the truck. It normally has several outlet valves for the different grades, and there are separate tanks underground, with separate fill tubes for each one. usually for regular and super, and maybe diesel. Mid-grade is often mixed at the pump.
If you go look in the area where the tanker downloads, you will notice there are three or four manhole covers, indicating there are three or four underground tanks. The tanker driver only downloads to one underground tank at a time, and may, or may not carry more than one grade of fuel in seperate compartments inside the tanker trailer.
the gas tanker has different compartments for different fuels also they receive an order before they show up so they now how much to put in each tank... now it may appear like they only dump to one whole and that is possible if they were only filling like diesel or a grade that at the station had a much bigger tank. but they dump into different tanks.
    Multiple compartments and valves .

Is Obama wrong to bash oil companies when the Democratically controlled Congress is more to blame?

Why doesn't Congress let us drill for more oil and build more refineries and nuclear power plants? Is Obama wrong to bash oil companies when the Democratically controlled Congress is more to blame?
Ask the oil companies why they aren't drilling in the places they are already allowed to drill. They are already allowed to drill places that they aren't. This is NOT the Democrats fault. Is Obama wrong to bash oil companies when the Democratically controlled Congress is more to blame?
Congress loves the abuses that the speculators are inflicting on the people. Making speculators put up the full amount when buying futures could end the madness. Congress could also take positive action by rationing gasoline. Imaging the effect of that on speculators?? Just the thought of it could drive the price down 40% almost overnight. Obama fails to understand that Oil companies are the backbone of most retirement plans. Those earnings flow right into pension funds and 401k's.
The Oil Companies are free to drill at any time in many, many places where it is known that oil exists. They do not build more refineries because the refineries we have now are only running at about 85% of their capacity. They don't want to build more. The Congress of the US really cannot FORCE the oil companies to drill for more oil or build more refineries. And where were the Republicans when they controlled the White House and Congress for 6 years ?? I'll tell you where they were. They were extremely busy soliciting other men for sex in public toilets and trying to get into the trousers of the House and Senate Pages, packing up to go to jail for corruption, and lying us into unnecessary wars to get 4100 of our troops killed, and allowing BILLIONS of dollars of our tax money to be stolen, raising the national debt (which our kids and grandkids will have to pay) beyond all reason, and preventing any inspection of goods coming into the country to keep out tainted drugs that kill us or our kids, even our dogs and cats. They were DEMONICALLY busy !!!!
We should save our oil until we really need it just like China and Russia does. Think about it, if their is more oil supply that means lower profits for oil companies and the morals of a corporation is to profit and shareholder. Nuclear plants take 18+ years to pay back what energy it takes to build and they use a ton of fresh water which will be the new oil.
Seems odd for Obama to bash the oil companies that he is in bed with $$, via huge financial contributions.....just another Obama deception.
Since oil companies are funding Obama 2 to 1 over McCain, I think he is biting the hand that feeds him.
the Repubs had 6 years of TOTAL control of Washington

why didnt they do ANYTHING then?

they had carte blanche, why did they just sit there and use Washington like thier own private ATM's????
I hardly think you could call our congress 'controlled'.

How is it that oil prices are at their highest when oil companies are making their record sales?

Geez, what a coincidence? When oil prices have risen so drastically becuase of the ';Iraq war';, American oil companies are making more money then ever. How is it that oil prices are at their highest when oil companies are making their record sales?
Big Oil knows that they've got you over a barrel. There is no oil shortage, so the new reason for raising prices is, Worry. See, this is why we need to give tax breaks to the rich. Why, poor old Exxon is being asked to pay A FAIR SHARE OF TAXES!!! What has the US come to when a successful (how successful? Well, they're the most successful company in the history of the world) can't gouge the middle and working classes for both their money and Exxon's taxes? It's un-Bushian, that's what. Because Texas is George W. Bush's home state and his friends are benefiting-therefore he will do nothing about the price gouging they are enjoying.
and the international competition for oil demand with china isn't helping things either

What would happen if the oil companies dropped their prices?

What if oil was more affordable and available to everyone?

How would that affect transportation? What would happen if the oil companies dropped their prices?
Your first two question are counter to one another.

If oil companies dropped their prices, they would go broke. But the idea that non-guvmint owned oil companies set their own prices is very far from the truth. The market, with the help of guvmint owned oil companies, sets the prices and the non-guv oil companies increase or decrease their activity to match their income. This is the way it has been since the US guvmint quit controlling the price that could be charged for domestic production.

If oil were more affordable (like it has been for several weeks now) then more would be consumed (more cars going more miles) and the excess soon removed from the market. That is the law of supply and demand. The problem of course is that reducing demand for oil and oil products is a rare and unique occurrence. Even now when it appears that supply exceeds demand, it truly hasn't and the price at the pump is already starting to figure that out.

Additional information: Public/private oil companies control less than 15% of the reserves in the ground today. In excess of 85% are in control of state owned companies like all of those belonging to OPEC, the National Oil Co of China, Statoil, etc.

To see just how this is all divided, you can look at or download the world oil/gas review available on BP's website - ref below. What would happen if the oil companies dropped their prices?
Ok, I had this classic example in Econ. The thing is, oil and oil companies are actually a conglomerate. But that is merely beside the point. If, as you say, oil companies would drop their prices, then there would be oil- for everyone at an affordable for some time. However, because that oil is now cheap, it would be taken up more quickly and soon there will be less supply than demand. Now we all know what happens when there is less supply than demand- either prices go up or people start selling for more money (i.e. concert tix). This is the reason why it's hard to mess with market equilibrium. Price ceiling or price floors are not good in the long run because they impact both buyer and seller. Now how that would affect transportation. Well, more people would go more places during cheaper rates. But this is hardly a rosy picture because oil is not a renewable source. In other words, it can only last so long. To make a long answer short, invest in renewable energy. Hope this is of help.
Demand would exceed supply. There is no total monopoly in energy market (though there are OPEC, Gazprom, and other giants like Shell). Oil demand rises constantly (was rising until crisis), while supply has already passed peak and declines.

Price of $20 per barrel would be sweet, though it prohibits most of sub-polar oil, oil from ocean shelves et.c. expensive projects from being extracted (doesn't pays for costs), while encouraging further wasting of energy, while it is cheap.

The only solution (realistic one) - development of lightweight easy to recharge energy cells + nuclear energy. Solar and wind energy is only good for PR. It is extremely expensive AND it requires enormous investment in power storage-transmitting infrastructure (Sun is above one hemisphere, while energy is need 10000 miles away)
More Hummers, more SUV's, more muscle cars, less carpooling, less use of public transportation. We saw it last summer when the country was driving less for the first time, well, ever. At the same time you had to go on a waiting list to buy a Prius, and car dealers couldn't GIVE away their SUV's. Now that gas is cheaper again the market is correcting itself. People have short memories.
blue chips are too valuable, they would never allow that..

as much as i support alternative energy, when i see some stock portfolios my eyes glaze over, as much as i hate the pharmaceutical companies, when i get tips from drug reps and see the prices, it's all i can take to not push the ';buy'; button......it's GREED....it's EVIL..

there just isn't enough for supply.....it's an unreplenishable resource....everyones dependency has to change....you know how it would effect it..we've seen it..it's good for the consumer...at first.
as a share holder in Exxon I would be really pissed off !!

it is the duty of oil companies to charge as much as they can !

    That's the American Way
Even better remove all the taxes attached to gasoline.
The answer above is correct. And that, of course, would move the price back up.
We would run out alot quicker and we would have to think of a new fuel resorce.

If oil companies profits are falling is this due to comparison of huge profits in the past?

Do you feel that we are paying the right price for gas now that it has jumped up so much? Do you think we will see a drop in the future once things settle down in the middle east?If oil companies profits are falling is this due to comparison of huge profits in the past?
In the past, when the price of crude oil rose, so did the price at the pump. Immediately, even though the crude price had NO effect on already manufactured gasoline at the stations.

Last year the big oil companies were being accused of gouging the consumer and Congress had hearings to determine if they should levy extra taxes %26amp; fines against the companies.

Couple that with a summer of decreased gasoline usage (our great ';strong'; economy, yet few actually traveled anywhere) and the price at the pump is down.

So yes, the ';falling'; profits are due to the oil companies stoppage of rape of the American consumer.

On Wall Street, all that matters is total gross sales and 'profits', they don't care if the profits are bankrupting our country.

And no, we will not see a drop in crude prices. China is quickly becoming the world's biggest user of everything, and their demand (remember they have 2 BILLION people) will continue to drive up costs and deplete the earth. If oil companies profits are falling is this due to comparison of huge profits in the past?
The ';right price'; for anything is the market price (i.e. what people are willing to pay) given the available supply.
I dont like paying so much for fuel. we need new refineries and to drill domestically while looking for REAL alternatives that are actually efficient rather than just gimmicks. Oil companies though making large ';profits'; overall, actually have a relatively average profit margin of about 5%. Dont forget that investors get that money not to mention that it is needed when they get to finally start drilling which is highly expensive.
As stated above, there is no real connection to current crude prices and pump prices, except that the oil companies jump at a chance to raise prices on a product that they paid much less for, than in today's market.

Also, most American's seem not to understand, it is not the availability of crude, that changes our price at the pump, if we had a real cost/affect situation.

It is the availability of refined products coming out of the few refineries. Did you know that the major oil companies control/own all of the refineries? Did you know that they will slow down production, raise the price, to suit their own needs/desires.

Did you know that a group of moral investors cannot open more refineries, because the regulatory board to approve such is operated by the oil companies?

Did you know that the first answer didn't ever get around to answering the question, but did allude to a different one, the fact that gasoline retailers are as much at the mercy of the oil companies as we are, which really has no bearing on the question?

The reason the big oil companies can raise the price of wholesale, refined gas, is because they own the refineries. ROFLOL, I am still amazed at the blindness of people concerning the lack of proprietary action by the two most powerful men on earth, concerning our plight and their personal business.

  • Should oil companies who do not add lubricant to their ULSD have to pay for injector pump repairs?

So what you're really asking is ';should people that put the wrong fuel in their vehicles be held responsible for their own mistakes?';Should oil companies who do not add lubricant to their ULSD have to pay for injector pump repairs?

Should oil companies and investment agencies be allowed to continue to ruin this country with their greed?

Or should somebody step up and put a muzzle on the hungry lion whose only interest is self preservation. Why should the freedom of private industry be allowed to put the whole nation in bondage?Should oil companies and investment agencies be allowed to continue to ruin this country with their greed?
Is it possible for anyone to stop them? There seems to be an anomaly in the free market system.Should oil companies and investment agencies be allowed to continue to ruin this country with their greed?
Until the government %26amp; the corporations are intertwined --- 'Corporations' shall keep ruling over a free nation. They pay Congress a large sum of money in return for favors. So until Congress keeps passing laws in favor of corporations at the expense of electorate, the populace shall keep paying a heavy price.

Irony is people don't even have a slight idea that in reality it is actually the corporations that own the government. Literally!!! Instead it seems it's not difficult to suck a large portion of population into propaganda.

I am not willing to sell out my freedom and liberty for the illusion of cheaper gasoline by becoming a socialist country like Russia.

They can't even get gas over there. Why would we want to do that?

Gasoline has not increased in price any more than any other product we buy. What is the big deal?

Jeesh America sure has a lot of wimpy whiners now days. Get a grip.
Of course. It's nothing, a couple of CIA operatives can't accomplish by bribing a few of these oil executives into doing by kidnapping a few of their family members.

Do oil companies work with car manufacturers to purposely design cars that are expensive to fill?

what cars currently give you the best milage for the least money at the pump?Do oil companies work with car manufacturers to purposely design cars that are expensive to fill?
Absolutely...and everyone with half a brain can see it. Europe and Asia use the most efficient vehicles-and manufacturers have started making alternative fuel vehicles (CNG mostly) like crazy to help with fuel costs. In the U.S. there's only one CNG vehicle made-and of course its only available in California-and they're extremely limited (Honda GX). General Electric had the capability in the late 90's to produce a vehicle that used water and electric to power it-I talked to the guy that had hidden from the public. They made it disappear. Just like the all electric EV-1's that were produced in California-and then taken from their drivers and destroyed. My 1985 s10 pickup gets 30mpg....and the new cars they're making now....some of them get less?? The oil companies and the car manufacturers are killing the United States with their greed. But who has the power to stop them? Maybe the government will step in at some point and help-but no matter what-I feel like the 'Hybrid' vehicles are just to make us feel like they're trying to produce something to help us...when in fact, I think they're just wanting to keep control of the fuel and continue to make money off the public. They have the technology to make a vehicle that uses no fuel...that would save the environment. But there's too much greed. I'll never buy a hybrid. I encourage everyone to look into getting a natural gas conversion (they're expensive)-or electric conversion (although this limits your travel distance). Propane works too though. Everyone should do their research and find something that works for them. I shake my heads at the people buying the brand new SUV's these days. It just seems like stupidity anymore to me.

And when it comes to vehicles that give you the best gas mileage...look into anything with a 4cyl engine. Small trucks...Nissan, Toyota, Chevy, Ford...tend to get really good gas mileage. Also, the older honda coupes.Do oil companies work with car manufacturers to purposely design cars that are expensive to fill?
Seems so, atleast here in America

Why can't oil companies invest a piece of their profits to lower the cost of gasoline?

Oil executives had to go before congress to explain their high profits. The 5 biggest oil companies made a profit of 123 billion dollars last year. What if they took just 1 billion of those, and sunk it into the price of gasoline. Would that lower the cost signifigantly? I think the price is artificial, though I am no expert on economics. If everyone is hurting so terribly on prices, then the oil companys should be hurting to.Why can't oil companies invest a piece of their profits to lower the cost of gasoline?

There are several reasons for the price of oil increasing. Some of them, of course, are artificial. But currently one of the main reasons is that oil productions are down; the weakening dollar has brought investors to buy commodities like oil and gold.
they wouldn't do that because it would reduce profits, furthermore, the price is partly set on the supply which is provided mainly by OPEC.
    because they want your money
Stop blaming the oil companies. That is such a game.

First of all, in the USA, the country with limited government and the right to pursue happiness, what place does the Federal government, who has no authority granted to it under the Constitution to do so, have hastling a business because they made a lot of money? Who are they to say what is too much or place a limit on the success of an individual or group of individuals who are following the law? That is Socialism and Communism. If someone works hard for something they should be able to keep it and not have the government steal it or covetous individuals petition them to do so on their behalf. Stop using their product and they will price gas competitively and then you'll see how much tax is up on that gallon of gas.

The real blame in the crisis ultimately lies with our Federal government and the agencies they created at the insistence of environmental whackos. The EPA needs to be abolished. It creates such onerous regulations and those regulations are the reason for our current energy 'crisis.'

They have not allowed an oil company to build a new refinery in over 30 years despite the increase in demand for gasoline. Think that won't lead to an environmental catastrophe with aging facilities that are being asked to do more than they were designed to?

They don't allow for new drilling in areas of our own nation where we could actually achieve energy independence; ie ANWR, the Everglades, the Dakotas. And yet as a result of their policies, China will soon begin drilling for oil only 300 miles off our shores in our own hemisphere.

And now there is the global warming scam that is causing the US economy to flounder because we are being asked to fund programs that will have no effect while the largest 'offending' nations of the world will not be held to the same standard. Look at the alternative fuel scam for example. Ethanol is horribly inefficient and it is driving the cost of food through the roof world wide.

Complain about energy use and the same agencies won't allow new nuclear power plants which can be operated for a year with so little fuel that it would fit in an average person's desk? Our technology and production quality is so much better today than when nuke plants were first built back over thirty years ago. Yet these extremists keep us from using the most efficient power source that exists.

  • How much do oil companies make on each gallon of gas?

Help me settle a discussion. I say that the oil companies (Exxon/Mobil/Texaco/Etc) make about 30 % profit on each gallon, after taxes and the stations profit. How much do oil companies make on each gallon of gas?
If you do some research, you will see, for instance, that Exxon makes 7 to 8 cents profit per gallon of gas sold.

In contrast, the Federal Government tax on a gallon of gas is 18.4 cents, and then you add the state tax of anywhere from 15 to 30 cents per gallon...well, you get my point. The oil companies are NOT making a killing on gas prices like the media would lead you to believe, but the government is!How much do oil companies make on each gallon of gas?
Well, the companies you've named probably do make a considerable profit on each gallon (though maybe not 30%). XOM,Chevron, Shell, BP, etc. all produce both crude oil and gasoline. If you are pulling the oil out of the ground for $5-8/bbl and turning it into gasoline for $8-12/bbl then you're making some serious dinero.

True refinery players like Valero, Tesoro, Sunoco, etc. only refine and do not produce crude. Therefore they are only making money on the differential between oil and gasoline, which varies by region but is generally in the $8-12/bbl range on the gulf coast. Break that down per gallon and it's 20-30 pennies.
